Summer “Break”

The kids are finally on summer break here at the Young household, and let me tell you…I need a break. My husband is still gone on a wild cow contract, so it’s up to me to do all the manual labor around this outfit. So far, I have trimmed four head of horses, mechanicked on the four-wheeler, and dragged the biggest water trough we own into the yard so the kids can fill it up for a swimming pool. But we’re ready to ride and rope the sled in the arena tomorrow, so that will be fun.

I’ve been experimenting with different ways to convey comedic ideas lately. In other words, I made some social media reels. Here’s a fun video I put on my YouTube channel.

It’s fun to stretch my brain and figure out new ways to share a laugh. I’m also working on my next book (!!) and promoting my first book, which will be published this fall. Did you know that after you write a book and sign a publishing contract, you still have a boatload of work to do? I did not know that, but now I do. Some of the “work” is pretty fun, though. I recently went through several memory cards’ worth of pictures looking for images to share at the upcoming American Horse Publications annual conference. I’ll be a guest speaker for the “Art of Storytelling” theme. It was sure fun to take a good long stroll down memory lane and look at all the pictures I’ve taken on all the historic ranches we’ve lived on over the years. I’m looking forward to sharing some of those memories at the conference!

Click here to read my latest blog over at Western Horseman. It’s a peek behind the scenes at how I handle life with livestock and three kids on my own when my husband is gone for weeks at a time. Spoiler: I go a little crazy…well, crazier than usual, that is. The kids are used to it and the horses are adapting.

I hope everyone’s summer is off to a great start. I’ll be back next month with another update. Until then….stay cool.
