Laughing all 366 days of the year

It’s time for my annual once-ever-four-years post that includes no special news except it’s published on February 29.

How fun, an extra day this year! Which is perfect, because I’ve been meaning to post a February blog for about three weeks and was just about to give up hope and say, “Catch ya in March.” They say that leap years are to keep the calendar on track with the earth’s rotation and the seasons and all that, but really, I think it was implemented for procrastinators.

February was an exciting month for me. I attended my first-ever live comedy show, besides the one I performed. That still sounds ridiculous to me! My neighbor’s cousin, Joe Larson, is a professional comedian, and he opened/hosted for headliner Michael Yo at a club in Phoenix. My neighbor originally planned to go with me, but then she had to cancel. My husband was working out of state, so I drove north, left the kids with a family friend, and braved Phoenix rush hour traffic by myself. And I survived.

That’s the whole story – I successfully navigated through crowded downtown city streets with more cars than cows! I also parked over a grocery store, which was wild. Shopping carts loaded with milk and fruit in an elevator? It’s a big ol’ world out there, and this country girl got a little glimpse of life off the ranch.

The comedy show was amazing. Joe, Michael, and another young comic named Jack were absolutely hilarious. I drank an old fashioned and laughed until my face hurt. The drink tasted terrible, like all bourbon-based beverages do, but I wanted to try new things. The best part was the cherry floating on top of the ice.

After the show, Joe asked if this looked like something I wanted to do in the future.

“Yes,” I answered. “Most definitely.”

I loved the atmosphere of a room full of people laughing at the same absurdities of this crazy experience we call “life.” I loved that it was strictly a no-phone zone, so for an hour and a half, I was surrounded by 250 people who were all fully present and enjoying the same experience.

I can’t wait to go enjoy another comedy show and take my own place on the stage one day. Next time, I’m definitely going to order a Bloody Mary, though.

Here’s a fun little video from my YouTube channel.

Turns out, dressing up like my husband and making fun of cowboys is my new favorite hobby. Who knew, right?

In case you missed it, here’s my latest blog over at Western Horseman. This one was so much fun to research and write – hope you enjoy these inspiring quotes from amazing Western women.

Happy Leap Year!
